New Tax Law Changes
In 2006 three major tax acts were passed. The following is a highlight of changes that may affect you:
- The Tuition and Fees deduction is extended through 2007.
- The Sales Tax Deduction is extended through 2007.
- The $250 above the line deduction for teachers is extended through 2007.
- You must now report interest earned on any tax-exempt bonds. In general, this interest is not taxable but must be taken into account to determine your earned income credit eligibility and the amount of Social Security benefits includable in gross income.
The last tax act, which includes the deductions for sales tax and educator expenses, was not passed until the end of 2006 making it too late to be included on the 2006 tax forms. This means that instead of having a separate line for the deductions you will include them with other deductions and enter a letter code specified by the IRS. It sounds confusing, but thats why Im here.
